    Metrico PS Vita Review

A tad bit platformer, a larger part puzzle game, Metrico is so much more, and trying to describe it just doesn't do it justice. That's not to say it doesn't have its faults (because it does), more, that there just isn't really anything out there quite like it. The game is different enough to warrant a play through for puzzle fans, offering a good number of brain teasers. I'm talking about the kind that has you trying 49 times only to fail, and then that 50th, "that's it, this is my last try!" attempt you complete it without any trouble, realizing how simple it was all along. If you're not into puzzle games though, there is nothing here that will change your mind on that. With questionable controls, and it forcing you to use some awkward combinations of the Vita's features, many may want to just wait to see if the sequel fixes any of these problems.

Gameplay- 5/10- Now, a lot of other reviews will be overly talking about pie charts and graphs and those sorts of things. Yes, they are in the game, but I will put it much simpler. Metrico has a kind of action/reaction type of gameplay. For example, walking forward may raise a platform in front of you, while jumping may lower another. Walking right may move a platform right, walking left may move it back to the left. Or, it could be up or down, etc. A lot of the time platforms can only raise or lower a certain number of times, so if jumping causes one of them to react, you have to make every jump count. It's up to you to figure out how to use these reactions to your actions to your advantage, running and jumping to clear the screen in order to reach the next puzzle.
Speaking of the puzzles, they do, at times, come across a bit uneven. Some can be solved without much effort, while others will have you feeling like you should just give up. There is no rhyme or reason to the order of these either, you will just come across a few that can barely be considered a puzzle. On the other hand, solving a problem in a minute or so after being stuck on the last two for 20 minutes each can help keep you going, just the "pick me up" feeling you need to want to continue a bit more.
What will not make you want to continue on a bit more is the faulty controls. This is one of those games that likes to make you use all of those Vita functions, whether they work or not. Camera, both touch screens, and the gyroscope. Now, if I somehow made that sound like it is a good thing or anywhat adding to the fun, I apologize, because it is not and it doesn't. Let's begin with the obvious, the camera. If there was one thing I would like improved on the Vita, it's the low quality of it's camera(we have this thing these days called a ZOOM...), and it's shoddy quality is thrown in your face with this game. Trying to sense light and dark is hard enough(since dark seems to be all it picks up), but trying to recognize colors...., that's just mean. Also, what could be more fun than tapping the screen to shoot an enemy, timing your jumps just right so the platform in front of you doesn't rise too high to reach, AND doing so all while having to hold your Vita at a specific angle!? I'm not exaggerating either, just so you know, this will happen. I understand having all these features is fun to work with, but I have to wonder if anybody who made this game actually tried to play this game? I did manage to work past these problems, "work" being the key word though. There were times I simply gave up and was done with the game thanks to these control issues. I did keep coming back though, and I eventually did pass those stages. Just be prepared for more than some frustration at times solely based on controls or use of features(camera, etc), at times, they seem to take more skill to work through than the puzzles themselves.
Some of these frustrating moments could have been easily helped if the game would bother to even give you a tiny hint of what you are supposed to be doing. Maybe that's part of the puzzle thing, but half the battle is figuring out what works when and where. This is fine at first, letting you explore the options, figure out what needs to be done, but trust me, it will get tiring with some of the later puzzles.
If you do find yourself getting stuck(and you will), you may simply tap the circle button to restart at your last check point at anytime. For some puzzles this is actually required to solve them. On a good note, tapping the X button to make your character jump works just fine, though his leap leaves much to be desired.

Replay- 4/10 Unfortunately, there isn't much to make you want to come back to Metrico. I can see a lot of people making it half way through and not even wanting to come back to finish it the first time around. Once you solve each puzzle the first time, there isn't much challenge doing it all again. The game itself will take about 3-4 hours to complete depending on your puzzle solving skills(mine took me about 4 hours to get through it total). No online, no secrets or collectables, it's just a straight playthrough from point A to B. There are, of course, trophies to attain, but playing through the game again just to grab them would feel like a "push through", and nobody like that feeling while gaming.

Graphics/Sound- 7/10 Metrico's graphics are one of the things I enjoyed most while playing. While simple, and in no way utilizing the Vita's power, there is just something intriguing about the look of this game. The game uses very simple shapes and wire frames, combined with the graphs, numbers, and different vectors. All that with just a touch of portrait like scenes now and then thrown in. It all comes together very nicely, and I felt the art style was one of the more enjoyable aspects of the game.
The soundtrack is also a treat. In fact, as much as I enjoyed the visuals, the music and sound effects truly stole the game away. Each stage offers a stellar background track, as well as sound effects that, like the puzzles themselves, react to your characters' movements and actions.

The developers of Metrico obviously aimed to offer up a unique game, unlike anything you have played before. For the most part, they succeeded, but in no way does that mean it is a great game. It's a good game, and it's definitely playable, but when it came to controls, I believe things just got a bit out of hand. The Vita has some very fun features to work with, but that doesn't mean you have to try to include every single function. I mean, have you ever tried steering your vehicle in Wipeout using the gyroscope? If not, let me tell you, it doesn't work. In fact, I probably didn't even need to tell you that, you probably just could have guessed it. That's not to say it isn't a good idea, but the developers of that game knew it wasn't for everybody, so you had the option to turn it off. That's just not the case here, the game wasn't built that way. You have to use the shoddy camera, the over sensitive gyroscope, and all the other features. Some do work better than the others, but these things may turn a lot of players away. Because of that, I can only recommend this game to people looking for something new, something different, and are willing to try working through the issues. Stick with it and you will be rewarded with a pretty decent and interesting game. When all was said and done, as much as I got fed up at times, I did continue to play through it, and that wasn't just because I was reviewing it. After putting it down for a while, something about the game made me want to come back and try again, and that definitely factors into my scoring it. The game has it's problems, but Metrico is a fairly decent game with a nice challenge. With an interesting art style and an excellent soundtrack, it's a shame the game's controls, as well as it's lack of offering any reason to ever replay it, hurt the final score. Perhaps Metrico 2 will fix these nagging issues, but for now, while it's not for everybody, I say at least give Metrico a try.

    Gameplay- 5/10
    Replay- 4/10
    Graphics/Sound- 8/10
    Overall- 6/10

Update on OddWorld New 'n' Tasty PS Vita

OddWorld New 'n' Tasty was announced to be coming to the PS Vita, as well as other Playstation platforms, quite a while ago. Recently fans have begun to grow impatient as they wait upon the release, or at least an update as to the current happenings with the game. Finally we have received word on the current stage of development after the developers took to their blog to fill us in on the reason for the delays.

In a nutshell the development team stated that OddWorld New 'n' Tasty is proving to be a challenge to port over due to the expansive worlds within the game. They are reportedly having to "break down some of the huge scrolling areas seen in the PC and PS4 versions." This is a challenge to complete while attempting to maintain the same great gameplay. The team states that they are having to work "delicately and methodically " to get the Vita version completed.
OddWorld New 'n' Tasty will definitely not be showing its face anytime soon on the PS Vita, that is for sure. The development team states that they will have more information in the coming weeks and months. This likely means that fans will not be playing OddWorld on their PS Vita for a little while. However this is the price paid for having a well developed game released day 1. As we learn more on the development of OddWorld New 'n' Tasty we will let you know.

The Unfinished Swan Arrives on The PS Vita on October 28th

The Unfinished Swan is officially only a few days away from arriving on the PS Vita system. Tuesday, October 28th will mark the launch of the stellar hit on the Playstation Vita. This news comes after Aaron Kaufman (Santa Monica Studio Community Strategist) hit the Official Playstation Blog to announce the great news. The Unfinshed Swan originally launched over two years ago on the PS3 to raving reviews. Finally fans will be able to enjoy the adventure on the go.

In The Unfinished Swan players will be tasked with "finishing" a kingdom that lacks color and life. The world begins completley white and players will have to paint to reveal the world around them. The developers believe it best that players new to the game don't know anything more than that, so there you have it.

The Unfinished Swan will launch next week on both the PS Vita and PS4 systems. The price will be a more than worth it, $15. The game also enforces cross-buy even with the PS3 version, therefore if players own one version they will own all three.

Minecraft PS Vita Gets a Much Needed Update

Minecraft PS Vita has only been out on the store for a week and is already the most popular game currently in the minds of most Vita owners. This is why 4J Studios was quick to roll out much needed updates for bugs and various issues within the game.

4J Studios announced the updates arrival earlier today on Twitter. The full list of updates can be found directly below.

    1. Fixed a hang when accepting a game invite while in a game
    2. Fixed 'can build and mine' option in host options menu not functioning properly in creative mode
    3. Fixed a crash when attempting to download a save transfer when the memory card is full
    4. Fixed issues when attempting to buy DLC when in Ad Hoc network mode
    5. Fixed a hang when selecting 'exit and save' with a trial texture pack
    6. Added Turkish Manual
These updates are much needed but only begin to scratch the surface of areas needing attention within the game. It is extremely likely we will be seeing more updates in the very near future for the famed sandbox game. We will of course be there to let you know of them then too.

Prince of Persia Trilogy Leaked For The PS Vita

CZC.cz, one of the Czech Republics biggest electronics retailers has accidentally leaked a photo of the Prince of Persia Trilogy for the PS Vita.  The site listed a price that equates close to $50 in the U.S., and a release date (of 4 days ago).

Obviously this leak should be taken with a grain of salt due to the discrepancies in the leak. For example the already past release date, and an extremely high price with regards to HD trilogy remasters both call for a second look into the leak. However Sony has recently released several HD Trilogies that first appeared on the PS3, such as The Sly Collection, Ratchet and Clank Collection, and The Jak Collection. Sony seems to love bringing over Playstation classics to the Vita and making a quick buck. So it definitely isn't out of the realm of possibility that we could see a Prince of Persia Trilogy on the PS Vita sometime soon.

The Prince of Persia trilogy originally landed on the PS3, much like the other trilogies before they made their way to the PS Vita. It included The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones. The Prince of Persia franchise is a long running and very successful franchise that even got turned into a full feature film on the silver screen. The series has become a big part of Sony, so it is almost certain that we will see the franchise appear on the Vita and the trilogy offers a perfect opportunity.

First Thoughts on Playstation Now for the PS Vita

I'd be lying if I told you I haven't been waiting for this. The idea of renting games from the network has intrigued me since it was first announced. It doesn't interest me much on my PS3 or PS4, but I was ecstatic to be able to play PS3 games on my Vita, and on the go. So now the app has been released, and while it still remains in beta, I do have a few words to say about it.

Does it work?  Obviously, this is probably the first question on most peoples mind, and I'm happy to report, yes it does. Quite well too, though this will totally depend on your internet connection. Unlike the consoles which can be wired if needed, the PS Vita, being strictly wireless, requires you to have pretty decent wifi. I consider my connection to be pretty decent, and even then there were a few times quality dropped, but the games were definitely still playable.
It took me a while to choose a game to test the service out, but I finally decided on Saints Row IV for my first trial run. Being such a large, action heavy game, I was a bit worried on how well it would stream. To my surprise, it worked very well(well, except in my bathroom...). I did experience some stutter or slowdown at times, and I did lose my connection once or twice, but it did work better than I ever expected. Not to mention it looked absolutely great on the Vita's screen, well, when the connection was good at least. While it wasn't HD, it was good enough to notice and appreciate. The app does not allow you to take screen shots, or I'd gladly show you what I mean. I played for several hours with no trouble at all, and I must say, it felt quite nice all around. Controls? Well, we'll get to that in due time.
For my next test I wanted to try something where speed, timing, and no lag were extremely important. Obviously Ultra Street Fighter IV was the perfect choice. Being a huge fan of the series, well, since forever, I doubted it could hold up frame to frame while streaming. Now, it did work, but I would never recommend playing it like this, at least for right now.  As I expected, there seemed to be a slight delay between button presses and actions. I could still play it, but wouldn't dare try playing online competitively yet using the service. This is probably going to be true for almost any fighting game. Still, I can't tell you how great it was playing this game on my Vita, just seeing it on the system brought a tear to my eye. Again, the Vita's screen really shows off the beauty of these games. This selection was a tad bit more iffy on control issues, but like I said, we'll get to that. Patience.
All in all, PS Now on the PS Vita works better than one would think. Though, I do have pretty great internet service, so your experience may differ. With a little work and adjustments, this could end up being a fabulous service for us fans. But, it does need work.

Missing buttons! See, told you we'd get here. With some games, it won't really matter, but others, it will be quite noticeable. The Vita is missing 4 buttons, more specifically, L2, R2, L3, and R3. These are mapped to the corners of the touch screen. There are a few options to remap them to the back touch panel or mix them up on both touch interfaces. For the most part it works, but with games like Street Fighter, it kind of sucks. I was still able to play, but it was rough at times, and it definitely effects the way you perform. If you played Tekken X Street Fighter for the Vita, you know exactly what I'm talking about. There were also a few times I could not get the back touch panel to respond, leaving my car just sitting in the middle of traffic getting tore up by the cops. Other than that, everything I tried out feels right on. Saints Row played like a gem(besides that touch panel issue), and I was quite happy with the response of both buttons and analogs. If anything, some of these PS Now rentals will put that much requested, barely used, second analog to good use.
The thing is, this was something that was expected. It's not like we didn't know the lack of 4 buttons on the Vita compared to the console controllers. So I can't really complain about it, just know, certain games will be effected more by this.

Games and Prices As of now, there are 170 games offered. These range from Sega classics to Killzone 3 to Skullgirls. I'm sure the number offered will continue to increase, though I don't know at what rate. The problem I have right now is that I own most of these. A large number of them were offered free on PS+, so anybody subscribed will have them too. Why can't I just stream those for free then? If I own, say, Just Cause 2(which I do), why do I have to rent it to play it on my Vita? Shouldn't it be able to just recognize I have it and offer it automatically. It would have been a great feature, as paying for a game you already own just to play it on your Vita is a lot to ask.
Now for my major complaint about the service, pricing. We are talking $2-$6 for a 4 hour rental, $6-$10 for 7 days, $8-$20 for 30 days, and $15-$40 for 90 days. Now, if that sounds a little ridiculous to you, don't worry, because it is. Some of the higher prices, you might as well just buy the game, and the 4 hour rental, what's the point? Why not just offer an hour to try the game out for free? This is one issue that definitely needs adjusting.
This is a beta though, so perhaps things are just being worked out and may change in a future update. As for now though, I really think it is going to hurt the reception of this service. I, myself, really had to decide what I was going to spend my hard earned cash on, and for how long I wanted to try it for.

This is something I have been waiting to try for a long time. I must say, I'm quite happy with PS Now overall. Opening up an entirely new game library for Vita owners to experience(since we were denied PS2 games...), the service has a lot to offer. There are problems, specifically pricing and ignoring our already purchased games, but these things can easily be fixed in the future. I definitely see a lot of potential in this service, but only if Sony is willing to work with us on pricing. These are older games now, maybe not by much, but they are "last gen". Expecting us to pay top dollar just to rent is insane, they are going to have to accept that. They may even have to take a loss when it comes to the pricing. Only time will tell. In the mean time, let me know what you are playing!

Blastr, a Third Person Action Puzzler is Headed to The PS Vita

Blastr originally was slated to just appear on PC, however now it has been leaked that the third person action puzzler and shooter will be headed to the PS Vita as well. Thanks to the new Unity deal with Sony, PS Vita owners will get to experience this unique game on their favorite handheld system.

While there is not much details given on the game, we did manage to scrounge up what we could. Blastr is described both as an action puzzler and a 'shooter' by the developers. It seems as though players will take on the role of a robot gladiator, and enter into what is described as the "most explosive show on television." The players will have to outwit contestants in a fight for the death.

Blastr will appear on the PS Vita when it launches sometime next year. The game is extremely early in development so not many details are known about the game at this time. Stay tuned for more when we hear it.

HyperDevotion Noire Headed To The PS Vita in 2015

The Neptunia RPG spin off, "HyperDevotion Noire" will be headed to the PS Vita in early 2015. This news comes straight from Idea Factory International, after they have experienced great success through their games launching on the PS Vita.

In HyperDevotion Noire players will fight through turn based battles. These battles are said to be enhanced by a "lily system" that allows players to build bonds while fighting together. These bonds in return allow for extra special attacks and boosts.

Other than what we have here little else is currently known about HyperDevotion Noire. The game will launch on the PS Vita in both North America and Europe sometime in early 2015. Also for those junkies who already are wanting to know the price, although it is obviously unknown at this time, history tells us it will very likely be $29.99.

BlitWorks, The Team That Handled Fez and Spelunky, Will Port Dragon Fin Soup To the PS Vita

Grimm Boss recently had a successful Kickstarter campaign to develop Dragon Fin Soup. They would wind up meeting the PS Vita stretch goal as well for the campaign. The only question that remained was who would port the RPG over to the PS Vita. That questioned has been answered today, and to our delight the port will be handled by PS Vita veterans "BlitWorks."

BlitWorks has handled many great titles that have appeared on the PS Vita in recent years. These games include Fez, Spelunky, OlliOlli, Don't Starve, Age of Zombies, and Jet Set Radio. BlitWorks are clearly seasoned veterans at working on the PS Vita, because despite inital OlliOlli problems most of these games released without a problem at all.

Just as a quick reminder "Dragon Fin Soup" is described as an RPG with many roguelike elements. Players can expect to craft, fish, hunt, and so much more in this well rounded RPG. The release date is still listed as unknown, but could very likely be expected in early 2015.

Fenix Rage is a difficult 2D platformer that originally gained popularity on the PC. One look at the game and you will see that Fenix Rage belongs on the PS Vita. It is planned to launch alongside the PS4 version of the game sometime in 2015.

Ecolibrium Creators Announce Free-To-Play Invokers Tournament For The PS Vita

Edit: StormBasic Games Tweeted the VitaBoys saying Invokers Tournament will definitley head to NA and EU Vitas.

StormBasic Games recently released the pretty popular free-to-play Ecolibrium on the PS Vita with fairly good reviews. Well the team is back at it again by announcing another free-to-play title for the PS Vita in the form of Invokers Tournament. This news comes via StormBasic Games official site where they announced Invokers Tournament for the PS4 and PS3 as well.

Invokers Tournament offers players the chance to duel eachother in matches with up to 6 players. This is literally the only information released on the game thus far, so we are in the dark as well. However we do know that Invokers Tournament is currently only intended for spanish regions. However it is extremely likely you can see it make its way to EU and NA regions as well.

David: Rise of a King is in Testing For The PS Vita, as well as PS4 and PS3.

For the first time ever, a truly Bible based game could be headed to the PS Vita. David: Rise of a King was submitted to Sony for testing according to developers "The Tornado Twins." The game was submitted for the PS Vita, as well as the PS3 and PS4.

The developers have taken "The most beloved book" and turned it into an episodic video game. The Tornado Twins say that players will experience "a cutting edge gameplay experience" that stays true to the Bible. Players will be able to experience the story of David through 10 seperate epsiodes, assuming the game passes testing.

David: Rise of a King was successfully funded on Kickstarter, but managed to fly under the radar all the way up until the testing of the games. It is unknown how the twins plan to release the episodes, or if the game will be cross-buy following testing. We will definitley be getting more on this game as it develops.

Jet Car Stunts Speeds To The PS Vita Next Week

Grip Digital announced that they would be bringing IOS hit "Jet Car Stunts" to the PS Vita way back in March. Well here we are in October and we are but a week away from Jet Car Stunts release on the PS Vita on October 7th in the US and 8th in EU.

In Jet Car Stunts players will be tasked with racing Jet Cars across 36 increasingly difficult maps. Each map will feature several different challenges to send players to a fiery death, such as platforms, spirals, and blockade walls. The game will also feature 3 different game modes, even though the initial press release only mentions puzzle mode. We imagine the other two are time trial and competitive.
Jet Car Stunts will launch on the PS Vita and PS3 next week, and the PS4 launch will be at a later unknown date. Although unspecified, it is assumed the game will be cross-buy between the PS3 and PS Vita. However because the PS4 is launching on a different date it is hard to say if that would be included in the cross-buy or not. Either way this is all speculation. What we do know is this game will be on the PS Vita in just a few days.

Rogue Legacy Gets an Update on The PS Vita

Recent PS Vita fan favorite, Rogue Legacy, has received its first patch on the portable system. The game had very few flaws and certainly little complaints from us or our fans, but that didn't stop the developers from sprucing up their title.

The one issue that fans did have with the game was the Quick Drop Toggle, this issue was easily the most prevalent among users. This issue among many others were addressed in update 1.01. Check out the full list of updated features below.
    1. Improved Stability
    2. Fixed Saving of The Quick Drop Option
    3. Fixed Vertigo + Nearsightedness graphical glitch
    4. Fixed awarding of the Syngenesophobia Trophy
    5. Fixed play time registration
    6. Added automatic cross-save toggle.
There you have it folks, you spoke and the developers listened. So far the feedback on the update has been completely positive, we will let you know if we hear otherwise.

Pix The Cat Coming to The PS Vita Next Week

October 7th is shaping out to be a good week for game launches on the PS Vita. It has officially been announced via the Playstation Blog that Pix The Cat will be joining the grand lineup next week as well.

Pix the Cat was originally announced for the PS Vita and PS4 not even a few months ago at Gamescom. The game excited many fans of nostalgia because it is a game infused with gameplay styles of the past. Pix the Cat plays similar to "Snake", players are tasked with successfully collecting the desired amount of ducklings before the time runs out and its game over. Players will have to use speed and wit to glide through many levels without running into any walls or getting stopped by enemies. It is truly a game of pure nostalgia.
Pix the Cat will be launching on October 7th for a more than worth it price of $9.99. It is currently unknown at this time as to whether or not cross-buy will be implemented. However it seems that just about every game implements this, so its extremely likely Pix the Cat will too.
